I know my DeviantArt account has been nearly dead for quite awhile, but I've been busy!

After nearly 4 years of development, not only have I managed to land a publisher, but the Kickstarter for my game has funded!

www.kickstarter.com/projects/d…

Mana Surge has just 2 days left as of this note but we're funded and heading into the stretch goals!

I like to describe the game as "Uno... with Fireballs!" The "Caster" leads a numbered spell card and as it goes around the table each player must play a card that's at least as high as the highest played so far... or get zapped! With 3 paths to victory and playing equally well from 2 to 6 players, I'm really proud of it.

And the art the publisher commisions came out awesome!

Check it out!

Haven't had much time for DeviantArt in awhile, alas. Busy at work mostly.

I'm still working on Magical Mayhem- it's been submitted to Game Salute, so we'll see if they're interested or not- but at least I've now had multiple "pro" game designers say that it's a very solid game. :-)

So my current creative project is a card game. It's based on an idea I had around 5am on New Year's night and playtesting has gone well enough that I want to go through with publishing the sucker. It's a nice, simple game of angry wizards blasting each other with fireballs and lightning bolts. You can dodge a spell, but it keeps going until it hits someone and the longer it takes the more damage it's liable to do. :-)

Currently looking into using SuperiorPOD to print a proof version of the deck and see how it looks.

Today was my son's first birthday. We even let him have a little bit of chocolate cake.

I took the day off work for it, so it was nice and relaxing for me, too. :-)

Occasionally, anyway. Between work and little Thomas, we're really busy- I don't get much time to work on pictures except in the evenings, after he goes to bed.

Wow. Interesting news tonight; I'd honestly assumed that Bin Ladin had been dead for years and Al Qaida had just buried his body somewhere so that they could continue using him as a symbol.

Sounds like the rumors about dialysis and such may have been exaggerated.

Ah, well- it's still a relief to hear that he's dead. I hope this brings some closure to those who lost friends and loved ones because of him.

Thomas is nine months old today, and crawling around. He's really eager to start walking, too- he "cruises" all over the place now.

We took the new kid to Texas to visit all of his relatives. After 3 weeks, it's good to be back home, but I think Thomas misses the armada of relatives who kept volunteering to pick him up, play with him or even change his diaper. :-)

The kid is born and I'm taking 2 weeks of paternity leave to help Jenn deal with the little monster. Frank Thomas Sronce the Third.

So I'm not dead, just very distracted lately. You see, my wife is about 9 months pregnant, and "Frank Thomas Sronce the Third" should be poppin' out any day now.

That, combined with a serious crunch at work, has kept me too busy to do much art, or at least too busy to actually finish any of the big pics I keep starting. :-)

The secret project went over quite well, so I've uploaded a small copy of the image to the site. :-)

Man, drawing at this unaccustomed angle really gets to my arm. I'm midway through a "secret project" and I'm having to take periodic breaks to avoid having my forearm ache.

I just hope this one comes out well. :-)

So far the biggest annoyance has been that I apparently managed to miss both a $300-off mail-in rebate (by 3 days) and the announcement of Wacom's newer-and-better model coming soon. Sigh.

Anyway, I got to try the newer one at Comicon Seattle and while the new button arrangement was a big improvement (the sliders are on the back so you no longer constantly bump them while leaning too close) it didn't seem like enough of a huge improvement to be worth paying a fortune to upgrade.

Maybe I'll get lucky and this one will up and die inside warranty. :-)

Anyway, I heartily recommend the Cintiq if you can afford it. I've really started to like digital inking with it; much more approachable for me than inking with the old Intuos.

The beast is ordered. Got to help a friend (Tony Schumacher, of Digipen) set up his Cintiq. After looking over the amount of space it took up, and measuring the maximum amount of desk space I could spare, we did finally agree that we could fit it.

So it's ordered from Newegg (Amazon was out of stock). Hopefully it should be here the day before my birthday. :-)

Not too much going on lately; trying some digital painting again and not having a lot of luck with it. Thinking about asking for a Cintiq for my birthday.

Oh, and I made a promo page for the Hyperborean Mice RPG I wrote up: www.kizandjenn.com/hmice. It was nice to get some serious CSS work done. I ought to reskin my DeviantArt site, too.

I've got it up on Lulu now as a print-on-demand softcover ($18.99) or a straight digital download ($8.99). I'm going to set up a hardcover as well once I see the example proof I ordered. 100 pages of swords & sorcery goodness performed by talking mice and rats. :-)

You can take a peak at:

www.lulu.com/product/paperback…

Lulu's preview system makes the pages look much crappier than the full size, so I've uploaded a downloadable copy of the preview at:

www.kizandjenn.com/nb/hmice-pr…

I'll probably put the preview up as a free download on Lulu too, once I have time. The preview shows the basics of the system and some samples from the setting.

Feels weird to actually be done. It's been about 5 years since I came up with this idea and my personal versioning system went up to 0.7.4 before I could finally jump to 1.0.0. :-)

Anyone got any suggestions for good gaming sites to run advertising on?

In fact, I finally, finally, finally got around to ordering a printed copy of my proof from Lulu. I've been trying to nag Jenn into proof-reading the loose-sheet copy I've got printed, but she hasn't gotten far and honestly I couldn't really muster enough energy/enthusiasm to do it myself. I definitely suffer from that whole "fear of failure" thing that causes you to drag your feet rather than finish off a project.

So, I've gone ahead and ordered a paper copy because I think actually holding a bound, hardcover copy of the game in my hands will seriously motivate me to go through it and clean it up, after which I should finally be ready to put it up for sale somewhere.
